Checking out BALC materials from the library
The Baraboo Area Literacy Council (BALC) collection of books, tapes and other resources for tutors and students is linked into the computerized Public Library system.
To check out your BALC materials, please take them to the Baraboo Library's front desk and tell them you are a literacy tutor. That will allow the library staff to check the items out for the 4 month period. The collection is not available to other patrons, nor to other libraries.
Items such as workbooks, which will be used and written in, should be bought by the student. Materials for sale are available on the bottom shelf of the BALC stacks. To
purchase these items take what you need, leave the payment, with the name of the book(s), in an envelope clearly labeled PURCHASES and put it in the white BALC box.  If you have questions, please contact: Nijole  356.6549  Email:   netz@g2a.net

Would you consider helping new tutors by being a ‘shadow trainer’?
Would you and your student be interested in helping new tutors through “shadow training”?  Shadow training is an opportunity for someone interested in becoming a tutor to observe an active tutor and student working together at one of their regular lessons. Shadow training is not a critique of the tutor or student - a point that cannot be emphasized enough.

Shadow training is the first step in our tutor training process. It gives potential tutors a better understanding of what tutoring is all about. It would also alleviate some of the anxiety that new tutors often have prior to taking their first student. Through shadow training, prospective tutors might learn that tutoring is different in some way than they expected, or find out that tutoring isn’t for them, prior to investing time in training. Perhaps helping the literacy effort in another manner is more suited to their skills.

Can you help? If so you will need to speak with your student and get his/her permission to have a lesson observed. The BALC will take the responsibility of briefing the potential tutors in regard to issues of confidentiality.  If you and your student are interested in participating, or you have questions about this, please contact us at boolit@barabooliteracy.org.
